Rosa chinensis, also known as china rose, is a member of the genus Rose is native to central China: Guizhou, Hubei, and Sichuan.
It is a shrub growing to 1-2 m tall. From pinnate leaf, leaflets 3-5, with 2.5-6 cm long and 1-3 cm wide. In the wild species (sometimes listed as Chinensis Rose var. Spontanea) flowers have five petals red. Its fruit is a red hip 1-2 cm in diameter.
This species is grown mostly as an ornamental plant, numerous cultivars have been selected for variants such as flower color and usually increase in number of petals (semi-double or double flowers). The species is also important in the breeding of many modern roses, including hybrid tea roses.
Flower and fruit have been used in traditional Chinese medicine as a treatment for irregular or painful menstruation, as well as inflammation of the thyroid.
