Arthrinium austriacum

Refineria Developer
Arthrinium austriacum

Petr., Sydowia 1: 4. 1959

Apiosporaceae, Xylariales, Sordariomycetes

DESCRIPTION
Asexual form: Colonies on hosts punctiform, pulvinate to effuse, sometimes confluent, black 80-220 µm in diameter. Micelio consisting of submerged and superficial layers of hyaline to pale brown, branched and septate hyphae, 1.5-5 µm wide. Conidiophore stem cell spherical to ampuliform, attached to the superficial mycelial web by a basal cell of irregular morphology 2-4 µm in diameter. Conidiophores erect, simple, straight or flexuous, cylindrical, smooth-walled, hyaline except for broad, transverse brown or dark brown septa 40-100 µm. Conidia brown with 2 concentric rings paler than conidia in frontal view 9-12 µm in diameter, in lateral view irregularly triangular or polygonal 10-14 x 8-10 µm. Cells sterile smaller and paler than conidia, globose to ellipsoidal, containing large, hyaline, refracted granules.
Asexual form is not known.
NOTES
Arthrinium austriacum is characterised by the concentric rings of its conidia seen in frontal view. These rings are also present in Ar. puccinioides but this species has regularly polygonal (never rounded) conidia in frontal view. In lateral view, conidia of Ar. austriacum resemble those of Ar. fuckelii and Ar. morthieri because of their irregularly triangular or polygonal morphology, but Ar. morthieri has oblong or irregular conidia in frontal view

A-B Conidiophores and conidia; C-K Conidia in frontal and lateral view. Scale: A-B 20 µm; C-K 5 µm.
